I’ve walked across the Alps twice now. Each time, this little red book came along with me. The hiking guide is worth its weight in gold when you’re out of signal or your battery runs out. And both can happen surprisingly quickly on a multi-day hike.

I often get questions about my crossing of the Alps. I’ve walked from Oberstdorf to Meran twice already. Hiking through the Alps somehow helps you unwind and lets you leave everyday life behind for a few days, in the truest sense of the phrase. But only if you set off properly prepared. That’s why I’ve put together here a complete packing list for you, for example. I also want to share a special little book that I wouldn’t have wanted to be without.
- Detailed route description: This Rother hiking guide provides detailed descriptions of a total of 31 stages from Oberstdorf via Meran to Verona. GPS tracks are also available to download for each stage.
- Detailed maps: There are detailed maps for each day, showing the exact route and marking important points. This makes it easy to spot summit detours and any huts along the way. If your phone stops working, you can navigate easily using these maps and the written directions.
- Informative elevation profile: Each stage is also shown as an elevation profile. This lets you see the stated walking time and distance at a glance. Important waypoints are marked too.
- Discover alternative routes: Thanks to the book, I didn’t follow the well-trodden standard route. Instead, I found alternative routes for each stage, taking me to more remote huts too.
- Compact size: The book’s A6 format doesn’t take up much space, making it a versatile, indispensable companion. You can adjust your route while you’re out and still be well informed about what lies ahead.
