Oh wow, I’d love to do that too. How did it all begin? Did you take courses before heading into the mountains? What would you recommend to an absolute beginner? I’m asked these or similar questions all the time on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. I’ve collected the most common questions about learning mountaineering and am sharing my own experiences with you.

My toothbrush is within easy reach. The washbasin becomes our morning meeting place. With toothpaste in my mouth, I mumble a barely intelligible good morning several times. The clock reads 5:10. Time for breakfast. The coffee finally starts to bring me back to life. Ahead of us lies the climb up the 3.537-metre-high Schalfkogel.
