My eyes follow the waterfall in amazement. The rock walls are orange-yellow. The water, by contrast, cascades down in a white curtain, finally landing in a pool that seems to glow turquoise. It’s a dazzling display of nature’s colors. And the Groppensteinschlucht is just one of the attractions awaiting us on stage 7 of the Alpe-Adria-Trail between Mallnitz and Obervellach in Kärnten.
A relaxed day hike on a stage of the Alpe-Adria-Trail
The Alpe-Adria-Trail is a 750 km long-distance hiking trail from Heiligenblut am Großglockner in Austria, through Slovenia, to Italy’s Adriatic coast. If you want to walk the entire trail, be prepared for 43 daily stages. If you have less time, you can always pick out a few individual stages.
We hiked from Mallnitz to Obervellach, passing Ankogel, Stappitzer See and numerous waterfalls and natural pools along the way. But see for yourself …
Have you ever been on a long-distance hike?
